Three county locations receive historical designation

Sussex County historian William Truran announced the establishment of three new historical markers in the county during a presentation Saturday in the Ernie Kosa County Building at the fairgrounds.

A few minutes before the ceremony was to start, a cloud passed overhead dropping rain on the crowd gathered at the Deckertown Union and Papakating Cemetery to dedicate a new veterans memorial.

Richard Martin and his wife, Vicky, will spend today doing what he does every July 4 -- visiting the Wantage gravesite of his ancestor who fought in the war that secured America's independence from Great Britain nearly 240 years ago.

Dedication service at Deckertown Union and Papakating Cemetery

Members of the public are invited to attend a dedication service at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 2, for the recently completed Veterans Memorial at the Deckertown Union and Papakating Cemetery, located on Route 23 and Cemetery Road in Wantage.

DAR Luncheon Celebrates History....

The highlight of the afternoon came when Edward Vander Berg was awarded the Historic Preservation Medal for his work caring for and beautifying the Deckertown Union and Papakating Cemetery.

For the past 12 years, Ed Vander Berg, together with his son Daniel, has been caring for an ancient cemetery guessed to be at least 240 years old and presumably several decades earlier.

It was while two local DAR (Chinkchewunska Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution) members, Ashley Touw Ziccardi and Lisaann Van Blarcom Permunian, were searching for the graves of Revolutionary War veterans laid to rest in the Deckertown-Union (Papakating) Cemetery that they discovered fragments of a red sandstone grave marker broken into pieces and lying on the ground.

 Two members of the Chinkchewunska Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have the rather ambitious goal of providing all of the Revolutionary War veterans in Sussex County with new footstones or headstones, where needed.
